Intermediate Filaments in Cell Biology

Description : Intermediate filaments are one of the three main components of the cytoskeleton, alongside microtubules and actin filaments. They are approximately 10 nanometers in diameter, which is intermediate between the thinner actin filaments and the thicker microtubules. These filaments provide structural support and mechanical strength to cells, allowing them to withstand stress. Unlike microtubules and actin filaments, intermediate filaments are not involved in cell movement but are primarily responsible for maintaining the integrity of cells and tissues. Intermediate filaments are composed of various proteins, including keratins in epithelial cells, vimentin in connective tissue cells, neurofilaments in neurons, and lamins in the nuclear envelope. These proteins confer specific properties suited to the needs of different cell types. By forming a resilient network within the cytoplasm and nucleus, intermediate filaments help maintain cell shape, anchor organelles, and ensure the proper functioning of cellular processes. This book provides comprehensive insights into the field of cell biology. It presents the complex subject of intermediate filaments in the most comprehensible and easy to understand language. This book will serve as a reference to a broad spectrum of readers.
